Retaining Wall Waterproofing in San Diego County

San Diego is a county of hillsides, and hillsides mean retaining walls holding wet soil back from living spaces, patios, and foundations. We waterproof new and existing retaining walls so the water in that soil drains away instead of moving through the wall.

Signs a retaining wall is taking on water

When to call us

  • Efflorescence streaking down the face of the wall
  • Damp patches that appear on the wall days after rain
  • Paint or stucco on the wall face bubbling and peeling
  • Soil staining or mineral deposits at the wall base
  • Cracks with moisture or plant growth in them
  • Weep holes that never flow even in heavy rain

A retaining wall is a dam

Every retaining wall holds back soil, and after a storm that soil is a sponge pressing water against the concrete or block. Without a working waterproofing and drainage assembly the wall face becomes the drainage path. That is what the streaks, blooms, and bubbling finishes on so many San Diego walls are: water choosing the only exit it has.

The assembly, not just the coating

Waterproofing the visible face of a wet wall is upside down. The correct assembly works from the soil side: a membrane on the earth face where it can be reached, drainage composite to relieve pressure, gravel and perforated pipe at the footing, and weep paths that actually daylight somewhere. On existing walls where excavation is limited, we are straightforward about which parts of that assembly we can retrofit and what each option buys you.

Finishes that last

Once the water path is handled, the visible face can finally hold a finish. We repair spalling and cracks, then apply coatings selected for walls that occasionally see moisture from behind, so the wall looks as sound as it now is.

Scope of Work

What retaining wall work includes

  • Soil side membrane application where the back face is accessible
  • Drainage composite and gravel chimney installation
  • Footing drains with proper daylight or discharge
  • Weep hole restoration and detailing
  • Crack and spall repair on the wall face
  • Breathable protective face coatings

Pricing, Honestly

What drives the cost

Retaining wall waterproofing is priced by wall length and height, how much of the soil side we can access, and the drainage scope. A wall that can be excavated behind gets the full assembly. A wall that cannot gets pressure relief and face repair with honest expectations. Every quote follows a free on-site look at where the water is actually coming from.

  • Wall length, height, and construction type
  • Soil side access for membrane and drainage installation
  • Footing drain scope and discharge routing
  • Face repair: cracks, spalling, and finish coating

How We Work

Diagnose. Prepare. Seal and verify.

01 / Diagnose

Find the true source

We trace where water is actually entering before anything is quoted. Sealing over a mystery is how the same failure happens twice.

02 / Prepare

Fix what is underneath

Substrate repair, flashing, and slope come before any product goes down. It is the part of the job you never see, and it decides everything.

03 / Seal + Verify

Install the right system

Materials matched to your surface and exposure, installed to spec, checked before we call it done.

Straight Answers

Questions we hear about this work

Can you waterproof a retaining wall without digging behind it?

Partially, and we are upfront about the difference. From the face side we can repair cracks, restore weep paths, and apply breathable coatings that tolerate background moisture. What face work cannot do is remove the water pressure in the soil, which is why we pair it with drainage improvements wherever possible.

Why is water coming through my wall if it has weep holes?

Weep holes only work if the gravel and filter fabric behind them still let water reach them. Decades of silt migration clog that path, water builds up, and the wall face becomes the exit. Restoring the drainage path is usually the heart of the fix.

Is efflorescence on my wall serious?

Efflorescence itself is a mineral deposit, not damage. What it tells you matters more: water is moving through the wall and evaporating at the face. Left alone, that same moisture path corrodes rebar and spalls concrete, so the smart time to act is when the wall is telling you about it.

Do you build new retaining walls?

Our specialty is the waterproofing and drainage assembly. On new walls we work with your builder to waterproof the wall correctly before backfill, which is by far the cheapest moment to do it right.
